Forty-five female middle school students in the rural Oregon town of Duniway were marched in pairs into a locker room and stripped-searched by female police employees looking for stolen CDs, jewelry and money. The girls were told to lift their shirts, shake out their bras and briefly lower their underwear to their hips. No stolen items were found. Most of the girls accepted a $5,000 payment from the school system’s insurer. Six girls sued; four settled for undisclosed amounts. Two suits are pending. None received an adequate explanation.
