Science Equity Site Launched; Station Alters Ipas Ad

A recently launched Web-based letter writing campaign aims to help members of university communities address the under-representation of women on science faculties nationwide.

The campaign, Women in the Sciences: Left Out, Left Behind, was initiated by the Washington-based National Women’s Law Center and a new, women-focused organization also based in Washington, Women’s Prerogative.

Majette to Run for Senate; Olympic Athletes Strip

Denise Majette made history this week, becoming the first woman and first black candidate nominated to the U.S Senate in Georgia. She easily won a Democratic runoff election against businessman Cliff Oxford on Tuesday, taking 59 percent of the vote. The runoff was forced after none of the eight Democratic candidates won a majority in a July primary.

Her victory is also one for abortion rights supporters. Majette, who previously served one term in the House, is pro-choice with a 100 percent rating from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

New NYSE Chief to Keep Augusta Membership

(WOMENSENEWS)–John Reed, the new chief of the New York Stock Exchange, recently indicated that he would not use his position to urge the Augusta National Golf Club to admit women.

Reed, once retired but now interim chief executive officer of the New York Stock Exchange, rejected a recent plea from the National Council of Women’s Organizations to cancel his membership at the club. The council has been in a battle for more than a year over whether the famous club–home to one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments–would continue its refusal to admit women as members.
