(WOMENSENEWS)–2000. New Yorkers elect Hillary Rodham Clinton to the U.S. Senate. Clinton, the first First Spouse to win elected office, quickly became the focus of media attention in the new class of women senators.

At an early photo event for women senators Clinton made a point of directing attention to the other freshmen, Democrats Maria Cantwell of Washington, Jean Carnahan of Missouri and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

There are now 13 women senators. Clinton, who established residency in New York to make the run, serves on three major committees: budget, environment and health, labor, education and pensions.
