(WOMENSENEWS)–The patrons at Fuzzy’s Bar and Grill were riveted to the television screen, hooting and cheering like fans watching the Super Bowl. In fact, there were more avid fans in this packed Waukeska, Wis., bar these days than there were during the Big Game.
The reason: The sex assault trial of National Football League star Mark Chmura was underway last week, complete with explicit details, celebrity scandal, drink specials and free appetizers, according to The Associated Press.
Chmura was acquitted of all charges over the weekend.
Chmura, a former Green Bay Packer, had pleaded innocent to third-degree sexual assault and child enticement charges, both felonies. His accuser, 17 at the time of the alleged crime, says he pulled her into a bathroom, pulled down her pants and forced her to have sex last April at a post-prom party.
The bar was packed all week as patrons watched Court TV. Each time an attorney objected, patrons could buy $1 shots. When the pundits held forth, the beers cost 50 cents. And when court was in recess the appetizers were free.
