Women's eNews Wins Four Journalism Prizes

Women's eNews received four prizes for its work in 2002 in the National Federation of Press Women annual journalism contest, the organization announced last week.

(WOMENSENEWS)--Three writers and the editor in chief of this independent news service were recognized last week for outstanding journalism by the National Federation of Press Women--a 60-year-old organization of professional journalists and communicators that promotes the highest ethical standards, professional development, and protecting our First Amendment rights.

Women's eNews editor in chief Rita Henley Jensen, who won in the category of Web site development, said she was delighted that the one of the most prestigious organizations for women in journalism recognized the quality of Women's eNews reporting and writing.

The other three Women's eNews prizes went to Dakota Smith (best news article written for the Web); Thomas Schram (best feature written for the Web) and Jo Appelbaum (best commentary written for the Web.)

DNA Not Compared, Rapist Kills Next Time

Smith's prize-winning article, which ran Dec. 5, "Suspects' DNA Ignored in Central Park Jogger Case," focused on the prosecutor's failure to compare DNA evidence gathered at the scene of a notorious--and nearly fatal--sexual attack on an investment banker jogging in Central Park with a likely suspect.
