Nearly one-third of all women murdered in the U.S. in 1997, the most recent statistics, were slain by a current or former intimate partner. Guns were used in almost two-thirds of these domestic homicides. One study in Atlanta found that family and intimate assaults involving guns were 12 times more likely to result in death than family and intimate assaults not involving guns, according to News from the Homefront, published by the Family Violence Prevention Fund. Gun manufacturers are now attempting to market guns to women as protection from domestic violence when studies indicate a gun in a home increases the likelihood the women will be killed.
