(WOMENSENEWS)--Christian Coalition leader Pat Robertson, who wants to ban legal abortion in the United States, has condoned forced abortions in China, saying the Chinese are "doing what they have to do" to avert a population bomb.
Robertson, who has business interests in China, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Wednesday that he did not support a policy of forced abortion but said China has more than 1 billion people and is faced with rising unemployment and social unrest.
"I don't agree with forced abortion, but I don't think the United States needs to interfere with what they're doing internally in this regard," Robertson said. "They've got 1.2 billion people and they don't know what to do. If every family over there was allowed to have three or four children, the population would be completely unsustainable."
China pressures families to have only one or two children, but in many cases, zealous provincial officials have compelled pregnant women to have abortions.
